Analysis of Conformity and Group Influence in Twelve Angry...
Analysis of Conformity and Group Influence in Twelve Angry Men Introduction The film ââ¬Å"Twelve Angry Menâ⬠directed by Sidney Lumet illustrates many social psychological principles. The tense, gripping storyline that takes place in the 1950s features a group of jurors who must decide unanimously whether a young man is guilty or innocent in the murder of his father. At the beginning, eleven of the twelve jurors voted guilty. Gradually, through some heated discussion, the jurors are swayed to a not-guilty verdict. Upon examination, the film highlights social psychology theories in areas of conformity and group influence. Theories and Application Conformity Conformity, a change in oneââ¬â¢s behaviour or belief to correspond with othersâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Perhaps the power of the need to feel accepted is most evident in the character of juror number two, a rather meek and hesitant individual, who during several occasions of being confronted by more strong-willed or hostile jurors, displays quick retreat in his subtle opinions. Informative social influence is also apparent in ââ¬Å"Twelve Angry Menâ⬠. Juror number twelve, a well-dressed, advertising businessman for ââ¬Å"Rice Popsâ⬠exhibits a character that is easily-swayed by convincing arguments from both sides. He first changes his vote from guilty to not guilty after juror number fiveââ¬â¢s demonstration with the switchblade only to change his vote again after he is overwhelmed with ââ¬Å"evidence that he is unable to arrange in order.â⬠His inability to explain his reasons for his decisions to change his votes demonstrates the complication of the situation as well as his own feelings of incompetency (Myers, Spencer, amp; Jordan, 2009). Instead, juror number twelve relies on the arguments of other jurors and changes his votes according to the credibility of otherââ¬â¢s judgments. Canadas Copyright Laws Essay Example For Students
Canadas Copyright Laws Essay Canadas Copyright LawsCanadas copyright law is one of our hardest laws to enforce. The reason the police have so much trouble enforcing this law, is due to technology. This law is very easy to break, and once broken, it is very hard to track down violators. So although some form of a copyright law is needed, the one we have has, too many holes to be effective. There are three main ways in which the copyright law is broken in everyday life. They is audio/video tape copying, plagiarism, and software piracy. The first, and most commonly violated aspect of the copyright law, is the copying of audio tapes for oneself and friends. Thanks to the invention of dual cassette stereos, this has become very easy. You simply take an original or even another copy of a tape, as well as a blank tape. Stick them both in to the stereo and bingo you have a new tape. You also just broke the law. Along with copying audio tapes, now we can copy video tapes almost as easily. If you hook two VCRs together, they can copy from one to the other. You could rent a movie form the video store, copy and return it, with no one the wiser. The problem with copying video and audio tapes is that for every copy you make the recording artist, the actors, producers and everyone else who collect royalties from the tapes lose money. If the companies start to lose money, they raise prices. Thus a vicious circle begins. As prices go up, fewer people buy original copies. If less people buy the original cassettes prices will onc e again rise. Another major form of piracy is plagiarism. The stealing of someone elses ideas or work. The biggest category of people who fall into here are students. Very often a student when doing a research paper will accidently forget to footnote his work. By forgetting to give the author credit, the student has claimed the work as his own. Another reason students may copy someone elses work is to sound more sophisticated hoping that if they use someone elses words it will sound better than their own. Generally, this provides an easy way for a teacher or the police to catch them. Teachers also plagiarize rather frequently. Very often a teacher will photocopy several pages from a book, in order to save the students the expense of having to buy the book for themselves. While this is a noble act by the teacher, in most cases, this is illegal. Unless the author of the book, gave consent for his/her work to be freely distributed, teachers cant copy it anymore than students or anyone else can. The third category of piracy is Software Pirating. There are several forms which this can take. The most common form is very similar to audio/video cassettes. It is when someone copies a game or program from his/her computer to someone elses. As long as the two people have the same type of computer, (they both have apples or IBMs) this is a very simple process, so long as the programmer didnt put a bug into the program (a precaution they take against people copying their work). Another form of Computer Piracy is a cracker. A cracker is someone who has an in-depth knowledge of computers and programming. He can then remove the bug that prevents programs from being copied. After he removes the bug hes able to distribute the software at his own discretion. This is in direct conflict with the copyright law, because the program was not meant to be copied thus the bug. It therefore becomes illegal to remove the bug. .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .postImageUrl , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:hover , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:visited , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:active { border:0!important; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:active , .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330 .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u529138a2208126b44d794a8ab178a330:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hamlet as a Comment on Humanity EssayLike audio/video cassettes copying, computer games causes people to lose money. In this case, instead of it being the singer, or actors, it is the programmer, and the software companies who lose. This leads to the same vicious circle. More copies make higher prices etc.. The copyright law is hard to enforce likewise so are the penalties. If you are found in violation of breaking the copyright laws, you probably will only have to pay a fine. However, the fines can be quite subeztial and depending where you are in the distribution chain (how many copies were made before yours) the fine varies, with whoever copied the original paying the most. In extremecases, where a contract is enacted upon the purchase of the original copy like with Word Perfect, a computer word processor. Upon buying an original set off disks you must sign a contract promising not to distribute the program. In these cases, you could face imprisonment because now not only are you dealing with breach of the copyright law, but with a breach of contract as well. So the moral of the story is enjoy your large collection of audio/video tapes. Get those goodmarks on essays you didnt even write. Enjoy those really fun computer games, because under Canadas current copyright law and the amount of attention the police pay to this problem, it is very unlikely that you will ever get caught.

The Grocery Food Market in Norway free essay sample
I would say that the grocery market in Norway is a whole big competition. Thereââ¬â¢s a few big chains, such as Rema 1000, ICA and Kiwi, along with some other chains and small grocery shops in peopleââ¬â¢s neighborhoods. Itââ¬â¢s hard to know who is the biggest, because in a grocery shop, prices mean everything. People want it cheap, and people want choices. With as many big shops, we get choices, and we get choices in the shop as well. Choice to choose quality, choice to choose the cheapest. In the UK, Tesco is today a monopolist in the market; they have over 30% share in the market. But in Norway, none of the companies have a remarkable bigger share than the other. The market is an oligopoly, meaning that the market is dominated by many large companies, all of them being oligopolists. You canââ¬â¢t say if the market is elastic or inelastic, because itââ¬â¢s different departments. We will write a custom essay sample on The Grocery Food Market in Norway or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page But for example normal groceries suck as milk etc. , the market is very much elastic. People wonââ¬â¢t buy it if itââ¬â¢s a huge difference in price, but all of this has to be together with quality. People know what they have in grocery stores, and theyââ¬â¢re most often aware of what supermarket is the cheapest and also aware of what they want ââ¬â quality or quantity. The grocery food market in Norway ââ¬â cheap chains versus expensive. Our demand for cheap or expensive chains is very unpredictable. 1. Place factor ââ¬â where is the chain? Is it near yourself? 2. Demand for that particular chain increases in the area because thereââ¬â¢s not any options. . Supply of groceries depends of ability of the firms to respond market demand, and of course, the grocery market will always be there, itââ¬â¢s just a competition, who are going to win the audience? 4. Time element ââ¬â some suppliers can respond quickly to market demand ââ¬â other cannot. If thereââ¬â¢s a product that is very popular at the moment, the chain who has the most of it will be the winner. 5. It is very important to have complementary goods in the market. That will make your sales even higher. In demanding one good, the costumer would be likely to demand another good. à Look at Kiwi and Jacobââ¬â¢s in Norway for examples. In the area I live, these two are competitors because they are the only two grocery chains in the area. Kiwi is a quite cheap chain with cheap groceries, while Jacobââ¬â¢s focus on more expensive products with better quality. JACOBââ¬â¢S Supply and demand ââ¬â more exclusive chain, demand will always be the same even though prices go up because people like quality. There will be less quantity but higher price, but people would still want it. Supply will shift upwards because thereââ¬â¢s an increase of cost. Price will be higher both because they know people would still buy it, and because they need to cover the high costs. Exclusive products are more expensive, and they keep on rising. ANOTHER OPTION Rise in the cost of production, supply shift upwards. This might be because there are luxury groceries, and they will charge a high price to cover the costs of quality. Less demand for luxury brands and supply will also shift. This will probably be because a change in income. Quantity will be less, price slightly more. Even though what happens, there will be a quite high price. KIWI ââ¬â cheap chain Supply and demand for Kiwi. More people want cheap groceries, of course. More demand for cheaper groceries, and supply will also shift. Quantity will be more, price slightly less, than for example Jacobââ¬â¢s a swell. People want it so they are able to sell more; therefore they need more quantity. à Thereââ¬â¢s very hard to get into the market, both locally and in a bigger span. Thereââ¬â¢s a few that dominates, but actually, thereââ¬â¢s not many ââ¬Å"exclusiveâ⬠chains, so thatââ¬â¢s a gap in the market in Norway. Thereââ¬â¢s not really any competitors for Jacobââ¬â¢s, but their aim should be to get people to focus on quality so that they can get customers from the cheap chain market. Competitors for Kiwi, on the other hand, are many. You have Rema 1000, for example. For Rema 1000 itââ¬â¢s important to be where people live. Groceries are very demanded, so itââ¬â¢s important to be where people shop. Conclusion Right now, thereââ¬â¢s more people wanting to buy cheaper groceries; this is because thereââ¬â¢s less money because of lack of jobs, and people have to be more careful with it. Jacobââ¬â¢s have gone down the last few years, but theyââ¬â¢re loyal customers will always be there, who are the rich people in Norway. Kiwi will also always have many customers, because they have many stores all over Norway. But they need to look after their competitors, because thereââ¬â¢s many small and cheap chains that focus on price rather than quality in order to get a bigger market share!

He encapsulates the tenets of this great religion, and is so well-versed in them that they have become part of his soul, one that is immortal, destined to eternal joy in Indiaââ¬â¢s heaven. Still, he has a price to pay. He must lead his brothers in battle. Fight the great war of the Bharatas, the ââ¬Å"Mahabharata.â⬠Dharma, oneââ¬â¢s sacred duty, is truly the subject of the Mahabharata. Called a monstrosity by some critics because of its sheer size, the national epic of India nevertheless has a consistency of vision. Employing the numerous voices of varied storytellers, priest, demons, and heroes, the poem describes the Hindu ideal of scared duty. Similar ideas can be found in western philosophy. As mentioned in ââ¬Å"The Republicâ⬠, Platoââ¬â¢s conception of the ideal state placed each individual in his or her specific place in society, each with duties and responsibilities that assure happiness for everyone. The Greek philosopher also elaborated an idea of the transmigration of the soul, reincarnation or samara. The ancient Indians knew of the existence of the Greeks...

Reflect on If I could be any historical figure within the time period, who would I be and why - Research Paper Example In essence, politics revolve around who governs what country, what government is which country and how people are governed. It is argued that, politics dictate the social and economic lives of people in varying countries (Hout 3). As such, countries with good governance or political stability are said to have good social and economic life while those with poor political governance or no stability mostly suffer from social and economic slowdown (OHCHR 3). In regard to history and world politics, I would have wanted to be Dr, Martin Luther King Jnr. in the last three centuries. Dr. King had been brought up by a religious family where his father is alleged to have a strict hand in term of discipline for him, his elder sister and the younger. Despite the involvement of the family in church and his father being a minister, Martin Luther King was reluctant to religion and at most rebellious (Fairclough 35). Consumer Behaviour - Essay Example a. Consumer activities enable the marketer to determine how people spend their time as well as what activities they prefer to engage in. In regard to mobile phones, marketers can determine from a sample of mobile phone users about what activities/sports/habits they engage into, how they spend leisure time, what features of a mobile phone are utilized during busy schedule. The information obtained can be used to determine a link between the categories. For instance, all busy professional people use organizer, WAP services, and mobile banking features; hang out or shop when they are free; do swimming, read morning newspaper and play chess. b. Interest category determines what things and images are of importance to consumers. It enables marketers to identify the areas of interest of their consumers. For e.g. one fourth of the individuals show interest in networking. c. Opinions category enable the marketer to determine how consumers view themselves and what opinions they hold about othe rs in their surroundings. It is more a self/social concept. This helps marketers identify how consumers view and evaluate objects, other people and themselves in a social setting (Aggarwal, 2004). For e.g. most of the people shares the idea that mobile usage amongst students must be monitored and rules must be established for limiting the use in educational premises. By soliciting consumer responses over the above mentioned categories, marketers can develop consumer profiles that possess similar activities, interest and opinions towards mobile phone usage. Marketers can also determine consumer mobile phone usage by evaluating situational use of a mobile phone. Thereby, marketers can highlight different situations in which multifaceted features mobile phone can be used; or they can identify different features that offer effective mobile usage in odd/urgent situations. For instance, if a consumer is lost somewhere, a mobile phone can be used as a tracker. In any urgency, such as baby birth, the father (consumer) may use mobile-ticketing for quick reservation of his flight. In turmoil or instable unsafe situations, consumers may relay on conducting mobile banking for payments rather than physically performing transactions. Motivation & involvement and attitude are other individual extrinsic factors that could potentially explain mobile phone usage. Motivation and involvement of a consumer in a product depends upon his motives for using a product. Motives are those internal factors that derive energy and active engagement of a consumer in product usage. Consequently, it also determines its usage of that product. For instance the motivation of a business man to use blackberry is high than that of a teenager. Attitude refers to evaluative judgments that a consumer holds towards anything under consideration. Attitude is a combination of and based on, a consumerââ¬â¢s experience, knowledge, perception and cognitive skills. It changes the way different consumers see and evaluate a situation (Edell, & Burke, 1987). Different people evaluate products differently in different situations (Hawkins, & Mothersbaugh, 2009). It can sustain marketersââ¬â¢ knowledge of mobile phone usage; provided it is used with other variables.
